The International Law Society (ILS) is happy to welcome its returning and new ILS members to a year of international law activities, scholarship and opportunities in and around GW and DC! Members will participate in international law events, raise awareness for global issues, and prepare for careers in the field of international law.

We are also happy to extend our congratulations to this year’s Executive Board.

Congratulations to the new E-Board!

ILS has chosen its executive board for next year:

President: Dan Fiedler
Vice President: Johannes Munter
Treasurer: Nicole Henry

International Law Week Coordinator: Anna Luft

If you’re still interested in taking a more active role next year, the E-Board will select language table coordinators at the beginning of the Fall semester.

In addition, the following Amendments to the ILS Constitution were ratified:
Amendment 1: Gender Neutral Language
Change all relevant sections of the constitution to be gender neutral (e.g. Section 208.1) 
Amendment 2: Combining Communications Director & Secretary 
Consolidate the ad hoc position of Communications Director (pursuant to Sect. 214) & Secretary, so that the role of Secretary includes the Communications Director’s duties.
Amendment 3: Number of E-board Meetings Required per semester 
Change Sect. 207 to read ..”The Board shall meet at least once per semester…” 
Amendment 4:  One-time Membership Fee Requirement
Change Sect. 103 to require a one-time dues payment, instead of an annual payment
Amendment 5: Removal of Organizational Representative Position 
Remove Section 213 (Organizational Representative Duties) and vest all responsibilities to Treasurer (Sect. 210).
The  ILS Constitution will be amended accordingly.

ILS General Body Meeting Monday, April 6th at 8:15PM in LL 102.

The International Law Society will be holding its General Body Meeting on Monday, April 6th.  We will vote on amendments to the constitution and elect next year’s E-board.  This meeting will be your opportunity to weigh in on what you’d like to see the ILS do differently next year, discuss what types of events and programs you’d like to see more of, and determine the leadership and direction for the organization next year.

Please consider running for an E-Board position if you’re interested in taking on a leadership position; the document linked below describes the available positions.  Feel free to contact the current officers if you have questions about their positions entail.

GW International Law Society LL.M. Mixer

The International Law Society will host a reception on Wednesday, November 12, to provide an opportunity for L.L.M. students to meet with practitioners and alumni. The event will be held at the Front Page (1333 New Hampshire Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20036) from 6-8 p.m. Pending CADE registration, alcohol will be served via tickets to individuals 21 and older with a valid, government issued ID.

Dues
If you haven’t already, we are accepting dues for new members. It is $10, and this is a one time payment for your entire time here at GW.  You may drop off $10 or a check made out to GW Law SBA for $10 in the Intl Law Society Mailbox located in the records office. Deadline is Sept. 30th. 

These dues go a long way to help pay for club events and put you on the official list-serve for ILS.

February 18th to February 21st.

Tuesday, February 18th: International Trade Law Panel, at 11:30am in the SCC

  • Please join ILS on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 11:30AM in the SCC (LIS 201) for a panel discussing the proposed Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, Trans-Pacific Partnership, & the Agreements’ Implications for Lawyers.
  • Speakers will include Nathaniel Bolin, international trade attorney at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, and Raymond Ahearn, retired congressional advisor on international trade and finance issues.
  • Refreshments from Corner Bakery will be served

Wednesday, Feb. 19th: IL Movie Night, at 8:00pm in LL102

  • Join ILS in a showing of “The Square”, a documentary about the Egyptian revolution and aftermath revolving around Tahrir Square – Watch the Trailer Here.
  • Showing will begin at 8:00pm on Wednesday, February 19th in LL102.  Refreshments will be provided.

Thursday, February 20th: ILS Trivia Contest—Cowboy Diplomacy, starting at 12:00pm in the Hard Lounge

  • Test your knowledge of past and present instances of Cowboy Diplomacy on Thursday, February 20th during lunchtime.  These are questions about the most brazenly imperial, obviously hypocritical, and pointedly undiplomatic acts perpetrated by states and individuals over the past century!  We’re talking about countries that don’t understand borders, soldiers without orders, and dictators with hilarious facial hair.  And best of all…
  • Whoever answers the most questions correctly will win 2 free tickets to our ILS Gala at the Greek Embassy (see below)!  Not an international relations buff?  You still win candy and are guaranteed a great time!

Thursday, February 20th: Keynote Speaker Event: Regional Proliferation — Reinforcing Uniformity or Creating Fragmentation?, at 5:00 pm in Tasher Great Room

  • Please join ILS for a dialogue between:
    • Claudio Grossman, Dean of AU’s Washington College of Law (former President of Inter-American Commission of Human Rights and former Chair of UN’s Committee Against Torture & Human Rights Treaty Bodies), and
    • Dinah Shelton, GW Manatt/Ahn Professor of International Law (also former President of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights).
  • A reception sponsored by the International & Comparative Law Department will follow the Keynote Event.

Friday, February 21st: ILS Gala hosted by the Embassy of Greece, at 7:00 pm

  • His Excellency Ambassador Christos P.  Panagopoulos invites GW ILS members, JD & LLM students, alumni, and faculty to enjoy a night at the Greek Embassy!  Traditional Greek hors d’oeuvres & drinks included.
