(2) No Patent? No Problem! – Soft IP Mixer

(4) SIPLA Spotlight – Gabrial Mitchell

SIPLA Spotlight is a Newsletter segment where we feature 2L or 3L SIPLA members every newsletter. The purpose of SIPLA Spotlight is to introduce the 1L SIPLA members to upperclassmen who are interested in varying aspects of IP Law and have many different backgrounds. 1Ls, if an upperclassmen has a similar background as you, is interested in the same practice area as you, has interned where you want to intern, etc., please feel free to reach out to them via email (you can reach anyone in the law school by searching their name in the recipients line of an email). They have all been in your shoes and are more than wiling to give you some advice!

After growing up in the “middle of nowhere” in Ohio, Gabby graduated from Kenyon College, a small liberal arts school in Ohio in 2015, where she doubled majored in anthropology and dance. During her 1L summer, Gabby attended the GW Summer Intellectual Property program in Munich and worked remotely as a research intern for a small firm in DC. During her 2L spring, Gabby worked at National Public Radio (NPR) on their copyright and licensing issues. As of her 2L summer, Gabby works at the Association of American Publishers, the major trade association for book publishers. She is also a research assistant for Professor Robert Brauneis (apparently because she dislikes free time).

Gabby is interested in soft intellectual property, primarily copyright. Her interest in copyright began with her studies of Labanotation, a written form of dance, and a concern for the legal protections of choreography. Along with being the soft IP chair of SIPLA, Gabby is also the senior managing editor of IPEL, SIPLA’s soft IP blog. Additionally, she is the president of the Art Law and Entertainment Society, a member of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Board, and on the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) Journal. In her (clearly excessive) free time, Gabby reads (for fun), watches Netflix, bakes, and goes to brunch as often as possible.

– Have a great week!
