(5) SIPLA Spotlight – Maleena Paal

SIPLA Spotlight is a Newsletter segment where we feature 2L or 3L SIPLA members every newsletter. The purpose of SIPLA Spotlight is to introduce the 1L SIPLA members to upperclassmen who are interested in varying aspects of IP Law and have many different backgrounds. 1Ls, if an upperclassmen has a similar background as you, is interested in the same practice area as you, has interned where you want to intern, etc., please feel free to reach out to them via email (you can reach anyone in the law school by searching their name in the recipients line of an email). They have all been in your shoes and are more than wiling to give you some advice!
Maleena graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Material Science & Engineering. After that, she spent a couple of years working for business consulting firms before working as an intellectual property clerk at a law firm. The clerk position solidified her desire to attend law school and her interest in IP law.

Maleena was a Summer Associate at Baker & McKenzie during her 1L and 2L summer. She was based out of the D.C. office, but she spent part of this past summer working out of Baker’s London office. Maleena plans to return to Baker & McKenzie after graduation to focus on patent law and international trade.

Maleena is also president of the South Asian Law Student Association, on the executive committee of the Moot Court Board, and a member of the AIPLA Quarterly Journal and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Board. In her free time Maleena likes to travel over breaks and takes a lot of weekend trips to visit new places or to meet friends and family. She also likes to cook and tries to test out a new recipe once a week.
